Statement
“Try to make something so beautiful it hurts.”
Dorothea Rockburne
I’m a representational artist who draws inspiration from the world around me. Employing traditional techniques, I craft oil paintings on linen that express natural light and convey space and form with refinement.
My recent series of paintings depicts flowers, blossoms, and bodies surrounding my home. I find these ephemeral forms captivating for their movement and spirit and the beauty they add to my life. Their tactile delicacy, monumental form, and volume fascinate me.
I’m inspired to create the perception of light and space in my work by the detailed and lush textures of Baroque Dutch still life as well as the atmosphere of American Luminism. With careful rendering and attention to detail, one petal hovers in front of another, suggesting the thinnest of textures, and recreating the sense of wonder I get from the garden.
This precision creates a sense of order and at times, calmness, that I find reassuring, and necessary. The last several years, and 2020 in particular, have been very trying, have left people stuck in place, and have left many searching for something in which to find joy. With these paintings I hope to share some of mine.
